Frederick Maryland Hubzone

Frederick Maryland Job Opportunities

Historically Underutilized Business (HUBZone) program to help small businesses create more jobs in economically distressed communities.

Mayoral Candidate Jason Judd Proposes Business Incubator
It would be located in Frederick's 'Hubzone'
Tuesday, September 29, 2009

A proposal to bring more jobs to Frederick was presented Tuesday by mayoral candidate Jason Judd. Standing at the intersection of East and South Streets while construction was underway on the roadway and the new Board of Education building, Judd recommended a business incubator. That's where small businesses share space in one location rather than purchase or rent facilities.

"If firms set up shop in the city's Hubzone, which is some of downtown and much of the city's east side, they'll have a leg up when it comes to bidding on these contracts," Judd says.

The "contracts" he was referring to come from the National Institutes of Health. NIH is taking bids on a project to upgrade the country's health care computer systems. The agency is expected to award $20-billion dollars to firms over a 10-year period. Orases in Frederick is assembly a team of local companies to bid on a significant portion of those contracts. "And we see a huge opportunity here in Frederick to build the infrastructure in a Hubzone area to help bring the work and new jobs to the area," says Nick Damoulakis, the President of Orases. He says 40% of the $20-billion NIH is awarding has been reserved for small businesses.

Judd says an incubator can help create jobs in Frederick.

He says no specific site has been designated for the facility. "There are buildings in the existing Hubzone that could be fitted to accommodate this kind of work," says Judd. "We'd have to add up the square footage that's available."

Judd says city has to work with the county and the state to get this project off the ground. "This isn't something I think the city should do alone," says Judd. "But I think it's an easy sell at the county and the state level."

The cost of operating this incubator could be less than $50,000 during its first year, according to Judd.

"This is a smart investment that will grow our local tax base and create jobs," says Judd in a statement.

Walkersville Lightning Strike Causes Condo Fire

Walkersville Condo Fire

On July 23, the Glade Towne condominiums was struck by lightning causing a fire in the upper levels of the three-story building 500 in Chapel Ct. Smoke from the fire could be seen miles away as over 12 fire trucks from Frederick County rushed to the scene shortly before 10 pm.

By the time help arrived most of the residents were already outside, although firefighters did have to evacuate some people that were still in the building. It took almost 2 hours for them to put the fire out, and at that time lighting was the suspected cause of the fire but not confirmed.
Luckily no one was injured but the roof, attic, and middle floor were considerably destroyed. Many residents’ belongings were burnt severely as others were able to come back and retrieve their unharmed ashy possessions.

According to the Gazette; Ridge Cramer, president of Glade Towne's board of directors, estimated the building damage at around $1.2 million, and he expects it to take several months to repair the all of the damage to the middle units. All of the tenants were forced to relocate temporarily as the building is being repaired.

Some friends of mine from high school, Tera and Justin Baker were living in one of the condos affected by the fire and when they got displaced from their home they are staying a local Frederick waiting to find out when they will be able to come back to their home.

This fire was the first in the history of the Glade Towne condominiums which were built nearly 20 years ago. The buildings were constructed using concrete and brick with minimal lumber along with fire walls dividing each section. Knowing these condominiums were built to withstand fire and damage is a relief considering all of the Glade Towne condos could have easily burnt to the ground if built differently.

Twitter Can Help Your Job Search

Twitter Your Way to a Better Job

If you're not using LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter to advance your career, you're losing out to competitors who are. Here's how to take advantage of each service's best features - and avoid their pitfalls.

Things you will need:

  • An updated resume. Have this handy so you can transfer relevant information to different social-media sites quickly.
  • A digital photo of yourself. Get a good head shot of yourself showing you at your professional best to use in your profiles.
  • Your e-mail contact list. Once you join a network, you’ll want to quickly send invitations to connect to your professional contacts. In many cases, this can be done automatically using tools on each site.
If you enjoyed this post, please consider leaving a comment and subscribe to my RSS feed or via email to ensure you can enjoy the latest post(s).

If you aren’t using social-media sites to tap into career and business opportunities in today’s tough economy, you should be. A survey released in January by the Pew Internet and American Life Project found that more than one-third of all Americans now have profiles on social-networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, up from just 8 percent in 2005. And it’s not primarily kids, either: The average LinkedIn user is 40 years old; most Twitter users are now 35 and older; and people from 35 to 54 now represent the biggest group of users on Facebook. “You get access to people via LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter that you can’t get in other ways,” says Sharon Rich, founder of outplacement consulting and coaching firm Leadership Incorporated. “I think it’s mandatory to be on there.”

Social-media sites can become a time suck, so you’ll need to limit the time you invest in them each week. But done right, social networking is a powerful way to build your professional reputation, find out about job opportunities, and keep abreast of the latest news and gossip in your industry.

Build a Powerhouse Profile on LinkedIn

LinkedIn’s business-only focus makes the site popular with successful professionals (so far, the site has 43 million members in more than 200 countries), so it’s the best place to start your social-media push. LinkedIn’s large amount of traffic also means that your profile there is likely to be the first thing that potential employers and clients see when they google your name, so it’s important to invest some time in building a strong profile. “Why not tell the story your way?” says Randy Hain, managing partner of Bell Oaks Executive Search in Atlanta. Hain knows firsthand the value of a good profile: He recently signed a client (who will do an estimated $100,000 to $200,000 worth of new business this year) when the client searched for Hain’s LinkedIn profile after reading an article he wrote in a trade publication.

Checklist

How to Shape Your Personal Brand on LinkedIn

  • Seek out recommendations from past bosses, key clients, colleagues, and direct reports to create a 360-degree picture of your strengths. Tell them that you’ll be happy to do the same for them.
  • Instead of a generic job title at the top of your profile, such as “Owner of John Doe and Associates,” use a short description of valuable credentials that you can quantify, such as “20-year veteran of $100 million in high-tech mergers,” advises Chris Muccio, author of the book 42 Rules for 24-Hour Success on LinkedIn.
  • Fill out the “Interests” section with pursuits, such as charitable projects, that reinforce your value to potential employers and clients.
  • For consistency and branding, use a good head shot of yourself as your photo, and use the same photo on other social networks, advises Megan Hendricks, director, employer relations at the College of Business at the University of South Florida.
  • Opt for a free vanity address for your profile that uses your full name, such as linkedin.com/in/janedoe, so colleagues can find your profile easily.

Frederick Incinerator Drama on TV

Frederick Public Cable Show

Recent Frederick Maryland Employment Listings Below
Twice now I was surfing on cable and caught a community discussion or a debate on the Frederick County Government Website. Both times it was actually interesting and I learned things about this really great county we live in.

Frederick County, MD - Official Website - FCG TV

Frederick County Government TV ... Tune to Cable Channel 19 to watch. Live and replayed County Government ... FCG TV Broadcast Schedule. Watch FCG TV! ...

In both occasions there was spirited debate, I saw our aldermen in action. The first time was not a public discussion (save the cable TV cameras). Apparently the Volunteer Fire Men wanted more of a say in how the manpower they bring to the table is being used. I heard on spokesman for the Volunteers ask for recognition of all the (as yet unknown to me) resources they provide.

Urbana MD VFD Carnival

The County (broad term I know, it looked to me like it was aldermen, alderwomen, a Fire Department person or two and a Frederick County Lawyer) replied that it didn't seem like an unreasonable request. One County Fire Department guy said they liked it when there was one person to deal with on the volunteer side of requests. It was unclear if there was one person speaking for the volunteers... then it got testy!

Not quite Jerry Springer, but contentious enough to grab my attention. One volunteer guy asked to be considered equals.

That brought out a louder response from a County big whig (I'm sorry I don't know their names yet) He replied:

YOUR NOT EQUAL, I know you pay for a lot but we put up $40,000,000

really?

I didn't know either one of those facts (and I'm glad I stumbled onto this station).

That's how much Frederick County puts into the Fire and Rescue Budget?
wow.... and I found the second part more interesting:

The Volunteers pay for their own vehicles (these are NOT cheap vehicles, they're easily a quarter million dollars a pop)

The second time I tuned in (OK, I didn't go looking on purpose, the history channel had something boring on and I'd seen it already) was a community discussion on the proposed incinerator.

Lots of people spoke up against the incinerator. One guy was eloquent, eloquent enough to grab my attention, an elder women replied that his grasp of the facts was not up to date. He claimed Montgomery County's incinerator is operating at 80% and she said that Montgomery County is telling her that's not the case. The guy said he got his facts from the Internet... Ooops.

The one thing that stood out for me was an older Frederick County representative, again I don't know who is an alderman and who isn't (I'm coming to this interest in local politics rather late in life, but I'm catching up)... the main guy said he heard lots of people say they do not want the damn thing but not one of them had any suggestions as what to do with the left over waste.

And I didn't know this either: Even if you recycle, Even if you recycle a lot, even if you dig the landfill up and reuse (bio fuel? methane collection) you are still going to have crap left over.

And no one wants to talk about what to do with that.

Frederick Maryland Landfill Hauling Contractor

Right now we're trucking the waste out of the county.

Maryland Sen. Alexander X. Mooney said Monday he is willing to support amendments to the bill he introduced Friday to limit where counties could operate and build incinerators.

The bill would bar the state from granting permits for incinerators within one mile of a national park.

If passed, the bill would rule out Frederick County's preferred location for its proposed $527 million incinerator — "the McKinney site," which is located in Buckeystown between I-270 and Md. Route 85 near the Monocacy National Battlefield.

Mooney said he has not yet decided whether or not he supports or opposes an incinerator in Frederick County, but that he "tend[s] to oppose it in general."

He said he has heard "a lot" of opposition to the incinerator, and its proposed location, from his constituents, and that he "agree[s] with their concerns."

So he decided to introduce his bill.

Frederick Hiring Improving - Summer Internships too

Unskilled Workers Finding Temp Work

One economic indicator that you're not very likely to see is the number of (relatively) unskilled workers actually finding day work at Labor Ready in downtown City of Frederick. Yesterday everybody that showed up for temporary work (who got there early enough) went out the door to a job that day. Temporary work is usually the realm of the homeless but I found it extremely useful more than once to finance my job search (made enough to put gas in my car and buy cigarettes)

Because my blog traffic stats show that most of my readers came here in hopes of finding a job I'm posting recent job openings for Frederick Maryland:

Summer Internships – An Insider's Guide to Washington, DC Internships

By Rachel Cooper, About.com

A summer internship in Washington, DC is often a once in a lifetime opportunity for students to test-drive their careers and make important professional contacts. But what’s it really like? The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars (TWC), a nonprofit organization that helps students locate internships in government, business and non-profit organizations in Washington, DC, assisted us in connecting with several interns to create the following profiles. The students answer questions and describe their experience in their own words.

For general information and additional resources, read Washington, DC Internships – Interning on Capitol Hill.

Intern Profile Index - Listed by First Name and Workplace
•Dominic - Ball Janik LLP (This page - see below)

•Jeanette - American Council of Young Political Leaders

•Jameson - National Education Association

•Rachel - The Institute for Gulf Affairs

•Christian - Congressional Office of Kendrick Meek

•Megan - CentroNia

•Darren - Progressive Majority

•Thomas - Senator Mikulski’s Office

Student Name: Dominic
School/Major: University of Ottawa / Université d’Ottawa – Political Science and Public Administration

Internship Placement: Ball Janik LLP – A lobby and government affairs firm

Duties: As an intern, I work primarily with the lobbyists at the firm to assist them with various projects related to their legislative work. I track the progress of bills and funding requests from the cities that the firm represents in DC. I also provide assistance to an organization called Transportation for America as they launch a grassroots campaign in order to help urge President Obama and Congress to create the world-leading, sustainable transportation system so desperately needed in the United-States. This is important because during the current session, Congress will likely pass the Transportation Authorization Act, which will set your country's transportation and infrastructure priorities — allocating hundreds of billions of dollars for projects that can shape communities for generations. Specifically, I attend Senate Committee hearings on transportation issues and report back on the testimonies that were given. I deliver letters to congressional offices and additionally I provide assistance during special events organized by the firm like fundraising events, which enable me to interact with American elected officials.

What did you like the most about interning in Washington, DC?

Everyday is a learning experience, when I first moved here I knew very little about the legislative process in the United-States and my goal was to observe it and learn about it as much as possible. This internship has definitely enabled me to do this above and beyond my initial expectations.

What did you like the least?
What I like the least is the weather. The crazy humidity levels, high temperature and unpredictability of the weather are hard to get accustomed to. Quebec City is much cooler and dryer this time of the year and the weather there is quite predictable, we basically get what Toronto had the day before.

Did your internship help you make future career plans?
Definitely, The Washington Center has provided many extracurricular activities that allowed me to meet and network with people that work at agencies for which I would like to work in the future.

What recreational activities did you participate in while in Washington?
I enjoy digital photography of landscapes and the beautiful sunny weekends we have had have been spent outdoors at local landmarks and monuments taking photographs and then processing them with High Density Range software to create works of art. I also look forward to seeing a few movies at the SilverDocs film festival. I have a few friends that will come visit during the summer and I plan to go visit some of the museums with them.

Where did you live?
I live in North Bethesda near the Grosvenor Metro stop.

How were the accommodations?
The building is really nice and has great amenities including an outdoor pool and a pub room! When I say real nice I mean it. But this neighborhood is not pedestrian friendly. I must take the metro for two stops to have access to a supermarket or a pharmacy. Considering I left my car in Canada and flew here, that is a bit of a drag…

Is there anything else that you would like to share about your experience?
This city is amazing, the people are great. It seems to me like a microcosm of the United-States, there are interns here from every States and I meet someone from a different State everyday. As your neighbor to the North, part of the experience for me in DC this summer is to meet and get to know who are these people that share the world’s longest border with our country.
